Is What You Are Eating Driving You To The Wall?

The clinic of spontaneous healing: change your diet

Many food items being promoted today, from infant formulas to "health-conscious" packaged meals, are dangerously deficient in a number of nutrients, which adversely affects brain development. The food industry is guilty of producing these over-processed, artificially flavored and chemical-ridden "Frankenstein foods", such as sodas, processed soups, sweetened juices, sugared cereals, and fiber-less bread. These foods invite recurrent cycles of craving an unhealthy fat or sugar, a struggle to resist the temptation, grabbing the bad snack anyway, followed by feeling guilty and out of control. Sound familiar?

In addition to unwanted bulges, certain kinds of foods can cause, emotional and learning difficulties, fatigue, depression, anti-social and criminal behavior, low exam scores, bad grades and hyperactivity in children.

Among our warnings and advice:
• Do not drink calories. Avoid juices even the freshly squeezed variety. It is nothing but water, calories and Vitamin C. Drink a lot of water instead so as not to gain weight. You can eat fresh fruits, as it has fiber which makes you feel full, and slows down the absorption of the sugar.

• Avoid labels! Of course you should read the labels, but to be honest, real foods do not have labels! Food in a can, box or other package automatically means it is a processed food with all kind of chemicals as preservatives, food colorants, and taste enhancers, excessive salt and/ or artificial sweeteners. Avoid trans-fats like the plague. Trans-fats are in obvious places like doughnuts and cookies, but also in less obvious foods such as bean dips and bread.

Look for hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oil on labels. This is code for trans-fats, particularly if it is among the top four ingredients; the higher up an ingredient is, the more the product contains. New York and California introduced legislation to ban trans-fats from restaurants by 2010.

Typically, the rest of the USA will follow in a few years. Some restaurant owners complain that as a result French fries will triple in price. As far as I am concerned that is just fine. African Americans and Hispanics are more obese than the rest of the population because they are in lower income, often poverty level households. The standard fast food diet of a double burger with super-sized French fries and a large Coke remains one of the cheapest food purchases in the USA. We need to pressure the fast food industry to offer affordable healthy alternatives to unsuspecting or unaware customers.
• Infant formulas and baby foods: Some formulas and baby foods lack nutrients that are important for brain development, and some contain neurotoxins. Infant formulas are obviously not for adults, but I have been told that some patients eat them thinking they are healthy. Many infant formulas and baby foods are loaded with calories, particularly through added sucrose or sugar. It is best to grind fresh food to make your own baby food.

• Wheat, corn and dairy: Many people are intolerant to these common foods. In children, symptoms of intolerance can include memory loss, anger outbreaks, depression, sleepiness and lack of attentiveness. Start eliminating these foods if you notice these behaviors in your child.

MSG in snack and fast foods: Many fast foods and snacks contain monosodium glutamate (MSG) a neuro-toxic and an addicting taste enhancer. MSG can be hidden under different names such as hydrolyzed vegetable protein and still be legally sold as MSG free! It is another example of the FDA failure to protect consumers from greedy food manufacturers. To avoid hidden MSG in snacks, buy nuts, fresh fruit, and baby carrots or make your own cookies or popcorn.

• Eat organic meat only in moderation. Eggs, chicken and beef are rich in arachidonic acid which promote inflammation and accelerate aging. Humans are born with long intestines like all herb eating animals. Meat eating animals have shorter intestines so that they do not absorb as much of the arachidonic acids. Eating so much meat is only a recent development in the history of mankind as meat became cheaper and more available. Excess meat is linked to breast, colon and prostate cancer. The meat and poultry industries contribute to global warming more than cars do. Vegetarians live longer and suffer from fewer cancers. You can eat meat if you desire, but do so much less often and in smaller portions. Meat should be a side dish and not a main dish.

• Vitamin and mineral deficiencies in teens: The average teenager eats less than two servings of fruit and vegetables per day. They also eat a lot of processed foods that have been stripped of nutrients. This can be linked to anorexia, bulimia, poor cognition and defiant behavior.

• Eat fish two times a week: Fish is brain food provided it is not contaminated with mercury, although such fish is getting harder and harder to find.

• Fresh fruit and vegetables: All types of fresh fruit and vegetables, especially the organic ones, are good for you. Limit the high glycemic fruits such as watermelon and pineapple. Avoid canned fruit.

• It's never too late to change your eating habits; you can make huge differences in your behavior and mental capacity if you start today, no matter what your age.

True, sweets are tastier than vegetables. The key is moderation and not deprivation. However, keep in mind that overtime, minutes on the lips become forever on the hips!

• Eating at home is making a big come back and will be the wave of the future. With the realization that processed foods are slowly killing us, the lost art of healthy and tasty cooking will be rediscovered. Regularly eating fast food will be for the poor and the uneducated.
